What is the consequence of breaking a teaching contract in South Carolina?
This is my first year teaching and I have signed a contract to teach for one year in Williamsburg County, South Carolina. Teachers in the county start back on Tuesday and I have family issues I really need to attend to at home in Florida. Is there a possibility of legal repercussions if I do not fufill my contract? Or will I just most likely not be able to teach in the state of South Carolina? Please help.
The contract does not state the repercussions of not fufilling the contract or any circumstances in which it can be broken.
There may be an exception if you have a family issue. Look on your contract to see if there are exceptions.

The district can apply to the state to have your credential suspended for the length of the contract. Most districts are fine – if you let them know that you will be away and cannot start – they will just let it pass.
It is entirely up to them – see an advisor in the district – let them know as soon as possible – If you simply do not show up to work – they may be less likely to be lenient.

I’m a little confused. Do you mean you don’t want the job at all any more or that you just need a few days off – which unfortunately are the first few days of school. If you just need some time off, they might be annoyed, but they’ll probably understand and let it go because it’s hard to scramble for a good teacher last minute. If you need to leave the job, just tell them immediately (asap) and explain your situation. They may not be happy, but they’ll respect you being upfront with them.
Either way, I doubt they’ll take any kind of major action against you. If you don”t take the job at all, they just may not hire you back again next year if you apply.
