What are the alternative routes to teaching certification?
I have a four year degree in environmental studies and am considering a career in teaching. I am willing to go back to school but do not want to commit to anything more than a 2 year program. I was wondering if there were any other ways to get your teaching certificate or if their are any accelerated route programs in or around the northern NJ area or NE PA area. I am interested in teaching science.
Check your state board of education website for which alternative certification programs your state approves.

I didn’t really have time to read through it, but you should definitely have a good chance looking for alternative certification as a science teacher.
The previous poster is correct to an extent. There are required education classes that you need to be certified. However, these do not need to be earned before you start teaching, if you are enrolled in an alternative program. If accepted, you will normally start teaching immediately on an alternative certification and earn your alternative initial certification and often Masters while you work.
Good luck.
You would have to have a number of education courses. Those are set by the state’s Department of Education, not the colleges. Make appointments with advisers in the Education departments of a couple of colleges close to where you live. The requirements will all be the same, pretty much. They can also recommend other colleges, believe it or not. It’s the time frame you’re interested in. Small colleges can only offer specific required classes once a year or once a semester. Some might offer a few in the summer. Each state’s requirements might be just a bit different, so check with each state you’re considering.
