In my district the BOE sets 3-4 goals for the entire district to accomplish (closing the achievement gap for ex.) Our staff development days are very closely tied to strategies for meeting the goals of each school year.

During PD days we are involved in workshops and seminars related to teaching. This year we are focusing on Reading First, Guided Reading, and differentiated instruction.

During professional development days, we attend workshops on areas that the district feels we need to address. It might be creating a positive atmosphere in the classroom, or it might be analyzing last year’s test data to determine the weaknesses of our students and developing a plan to correct those problems this year. (In Texas we have to have a certain number of hours of continuing education to renew our teacher certification, and professional development days count toward those hours).

During teacher work days, we get time to work on our classrooms, lesson plans, department meetings, etc. Basically those days are for doing all the things you don’t have time to do during a normal school day.

Are you talking about Verizon’s fiber optic offering? Fiber optics has been used for data communications for decades. At what stage in the development of a technology do you want to hear about it? Science News is an excellent, very brief weekly publication covering brand new events in science. IEEE Spectrum and MIT Technology Review generally cover a subject once it’s known that it’s likely to develop into a useful technology. Spend some time at a good library looking at science/technology periodicals and see what matches your interests.

Prepare lesson, change the room, training. Everything they can't do while the kids are in the room.

In my school system we have organized meeting. This year it was No Child Left Behind, BBSST(Building Based Support System Team) meetings. State Reading Assessment etc.
