Classroom Management tips for larger classes?
I will be starting my student teaching starting in August. I will be teaching High School English. Normal class size at the school where I teach is 11 students. This semester I will have more than 25 students.
I am rather short, and I have a naturally soft voice, which are challenges I must overcome as a future teacher. I am excited about the experience, but I thought I would ask for tips anyway.
Does anyone have any suggestions for classroom management/lesson planning?
I think it’s important not to try and shout over a rowdy classroom… if they out shout you/ignore you, you will lose any respect they may have had for you in seconds. Stand still and silent making eye contact with the trouble makers until they settle down.

I teach 1st grade..but I would think this might work for you also…I hand out tickets (little raffle like tickets) all day to my students for great behavior or answers, etc. They put them in a bucket. At the end of the day I pull a ticket. That student gets to roll a dice. I have a chart that say 1= no homework for that night, 2=special treat, etc. You could make it to fit older students. I am sure any would love to get out of homework!!

Create a set of 3-5 rules that you will not budge on. Talk to the students about the rules, and the consequences if they do not follow those rules. I have taught second grade for a year, I can tell you that shouting does nothing. I am short and have a soft voice as well. Be firm from Day 1 and stick to your rules and consquences. You could set up a reward system, I liked the raffle ticket idea another user suggested (but it might be too elementary for older students). Good luck!

Hi,
The raffle ticket is a good idea, but don’t use it in high school. It is too elementary, and too much for you to keep track of. I agree with the other emailer about having 3-5 rules that you will stick to. Many beginner teachers want to be friends with the students. They want students to like them. Remember from your studies and advices, do not smile until December. If you are too nice at the beginning, it is very difficult to become stern later on. As a new teacher, you are also discovering what kind of a teacher are you. This usually takes 2-3 years to figure out.
Good luck.
