Any ideas for quick classroom managements ideas with first and second graders for the end of the year?
I teach first and second grade and I am in need of some quick to implement classroom management ideas for the end of the year. I have a few very active children who are low academically and struggle to stay in their seats.
Sounds like things got a little out of control in your classroom. Is this your first year?
I made a flower patch by cutting out flowers and gluing them onto popsicle sticks, then I stuck them in a styrofoam piece. On the flowers I wrote, get a treat, get a sticker, get a note home, get a stamp which they could stamp their hand, etc. Every time I saw someone on task, I’d call the child to pick a flower.
The child could not see what was written on the flower because I held the box. They would pick a flower and get the reward. I had a jar of individually wrapped treats, a box of individual stickers, a few reward stamps with stamp pad and some prewritten notes that I could quickly personalize laid out on my desk. When a child got a "flower" he/she would quietly go and get their reward. If they made a big deal about it they lost the reward. By training them to do it quickly and quietly, I was free to keep working with the rest of the class but the anticipation of who would be next kept them all alert and on task.
I’ve used this method with a laminated poster of a Christmas tree at Christmas time with the rewards written on ornaments fastened to the tree, Easter Eggs in an Easter Basket, Kites in a blue sky, etc. The kids love it and it helps at those times of year when focusing is really really challenging.
