Can I get a teaching liscence or certificate in Ohio without majoring in education?
I live in Ohio and I have a bachelor of geological science. I would like to take the Praxis test so that I could teach. But I need to know if I can do this or if I need to go back to college for 2 more years to get my master’s in education? And if I went back to college I would want to major in Geological Science, not education, so could I still get the teaching liscence? Help?
And then is there a difference between a teaching liscence and a teaching certificate? I really would like to be a earth science teacher for an online k-12 school, but need the paperwork and liscence or certificate to do so. So I am looking to do the quickest and easiest steps to get liscenced or certified in Ohio to teach.
Can anyone help me out with this? Or at least point me in the right direction.
I believe you can teach with a Bachelors in any area without an Ed degree as long as there is a need. You need to call your dept of education (link provided below) and ask them about this. I know in other states they can issue you a temp license for 1-2 years in an area of need to teach in the classroom (depending upon if you pass the background check and a couple of small requirements). For your specific area and location, you need to inquire with them. They will walk you through exactly what you need to do to achieve a teaching license.
What can you share about teaching online at University of Phoenix?
OK, there are lots of posts of how a degree of UOP does not have the same clout as degrees elsewhere.
What about teaching at UOP?
Has anyone taught at UOP online, and if so what observations can you share?
Do you design the syllabus yourself? Is the administration supportive? How do you administer an online exam? What is the quality of the students?
I know someone who applied to teach. She worked at an administrator at a higher public school and was turned down because she did not meet some requirements. To teach at UoP you have to have a Masters degree and teach in a certain area to teach that subject. (I.E. Math teachers teach math at the university).
The syllabus is given to you prior. You can not make changes. You are given all the material and information on what is expected of you. The administration is supportive and you can rely on them for help, when needed. Everything is in the handbook so there really are no doubts.
The quality of students are mainly older, who are trying to go back to college to obtain a degree while working full time, or who have other commitments that interfere with them going to a normal week day university. The classes are about the same as a University and some classes require more, some require less. This is anywhere you go, whether it be online or in a class environment. You have teachers who are easy and others who are hard. It’s really what fits your schedule. Same with students at any University….some intelligent and there to learn…some unwilling to participate. I have attended both UoP and our state university and they are really the same. Some look down on an online college but really it is the same environment and learning tools. I found that UoP sometimes required a little more (homework & participation wise…) where as my state University only gave 3 tests and those were your grades.
UoP does ask for a resume and are kind of technical on who they hire. They have to be up to date on all curriculum and standards. It is a 3 step hiring process. Hope this helps you!
How do you transfer your teaching credential out of state?
Is is difficult to transfer your teaching credential, say from Arizona to California? How do you do it when you are going to school in Arizona and would like to start your first year of teaching in California?
some states have reciprocal agreements with one another–for example if you have a teaching license in one state it will be honored in another. if CA and AZ do not have that reciprocity, then you will need to fulfill the teaching requirements (tests, classes, etc.) for CA. however, if you are simply in school in CA and do not have certification for AZ yet, then you just need to follow the certification requirements for CA and not worry about AZ.
Is it possible to get a job teaching in Brazil as a foreighner?

What are the alternative routes to teaching certification?
I have a four year degree in environmental studies and am considering a career in teaching. I am willing to go back to school but do not want to commit to anything more than a 2 year program. I was wondering if there were any other ways to get your teaching certificate or if their are any accelerated route programs in or around the northern NJ area or NE PA area. I am interested in teaching science.
Check your state board of education website for which alternative certification programs your state approves.
Here’s the link: http://www.portal.state.pa.us/portal/server.pt/community/other_routes_to_certification/8818
I didn’t really have time to read through it, but you should definitely have a good chance looking for alternative certification as a science teacher.
The previous poster is correct to an extent. There are required education classes that you need to be certified. However, these do not need to be earned before you start teaching, if you are enrolled in an alternative program. If accepted, you will normally start teaching immediately on an alternative certification and earn your alternative initial certification and often Masters while you work.
Good luck.
Is teaching in Australia very different from teaching in England?
I have left teaching in England behind because of the red tape and the beaurocratic crap. I have been in Australia for 4 months now and have realised I am not qualified to do anything else but teach. Having said that I am missing the job (more so the children) now. Can anybody help me with this question?
A very worried pomm.
I think you’ll find the beaurocratic crap and red tape is thriving here as well. Just add poor pay for the work done as well.
But if you love teaching give it a go here in oz.
Who taught the first teacher in in the teaching career?
The first teacher in the world in the teaching career must have been taught by someone. Who was he? Why must this first student be the first teacher ?
This is like asking the chicken and egg question. Everyone’s first teacher is their mother. In history, the first teachers were likely well read scholars who were self taught philosophers, much like the great Plato and Socrates. In religion, the first teacher is God. In science, everyone’s first teacher is the earth itself as we grow and explore our environment. There are many answers to this question and many ways to ask it. I think it is less important to know who was the first teacher and more important to make something of those teachings in your own life.
How start teaching your kids the alphabet/reading and when is the best age?
I have 17 month old twin girls and i am a widower, thus a single father. How do you start teaching your kids to read and understand the alphabet? I have seen other parents at a group i go to showing their kids letters, and the kid tells them the letter. How do i start teaching them the alphabet and how to reconise letters? i find reading difficult and i read slow, if i start them reading earlier will it be easier for them?
When is the best age to teach kids this?
i would read to them loads and loads.
i would only teach them the basics of alphabet, not basic spellings or even how to form letters. i started doing this with my now 4 year old before she started nursey and when she started learning it at nursey it was different to how I had. this just confused her more.
Early learning centre sell some brilliant books and audios which uses the same principles as schools, these might be worth looking at, that way you and school are teaching the same way.
sorry I know school seems along way off, best to plan ahead!
the early centre range is called Jolly Phonics and it includes flash cards, stories, puzzles, etc
