Hummm! Sounds like HR has dreamt up another torture for workers or you have to come up with BS for your business Adm. degree. Personal: a balanced life, good relations with co workers in and out of work, no drama at home, many friends, healthful practices, good grooming at home, good financial condition, no drug use, no addictions, many outside interests

Professional: quest for more knowledge of the company, good team player, respect for superiors, adherence to main goals of the company, desire to advance, quest for more education to enhance performance, readiness and enthusiasm to perform to the highest degree, total loyalty, ability to read all new corporate papers, ability to learn the constant new computer programs, no matter how ridiculous the developers have created these beastly things, open mindedness, friendly spirit towards new and younger employees with fresh ideas, proper time routine, never tardy, willingness to take on new tasks, willingness to participate in company outdoor exercises such as, I forgot the term, weekend retreats.

I’ve been a work at home dad for years, and when my boys were in grade school, I needed a way to handle professional development days. Perhaps you are not familiar with the term. It may be different where you come from. In any case, this is when teachers get the opportunity to band together and prepare lesson plans, review policies and procedures and the like. I have no idea if they actually do that but is doesn’t matter here.

When a P.D. day rolled around I was spared the routine of having to get the boys off to school, but was left instead with the dilemma of having them under foot. Leaving them to fend for themselves was not an option. The television is not the best choice and if it was raining, then some healthy outdoor fun was nixed. What to do?

I am a creative person in that I write software, as well as this stuff, so I apply similar principles and logic to solving many problems. In this case the issue is getting the boys attention, holding it for a significant period of time and keeping the noise level within a manageable range. There is nothing worse than attempting analytical thought against a backdrop of random, spiking calls for attention.

Obviously one can’t just say ‘Do this” and leave it at that. You must accept that you have to make the initial investment in time without feeling rushed. You will win in the end, at least eventually. After they have had a good breakfast, some brain food, sit them down and start a project. With two or more kids you can promote mild competition. With one child, they will be more out to impress you. What’s the project?

Pick a topic that might be of mutual interest and have them write short stories about slightly different aspects of that topic. Wow, they want to jump right in don’t they. Sure, because they think it will be over in two minutes. You must set the stage immediately. You must be excited about it, give them some resources to work with, and promise them some more time with you when all is done. However, ‘done’ is subjective, so you must establish some reasonable expectations.

One of the easiest ways to set expectations is to make sure they have a set of guidelines or markers to achieve. I use the Five Ws found at my web-site Short-Stories-Help-Children.com. Each ‘W’ refers to a simplified element of short story writing that I have explained for kids and parents. Just tell them that they have to spend x minutes, or so many lines on each ‘W’ section. Ultimately, they must be able to pull the whole story together so that each section is included and the story flows nicely.

The next step, when more than one child is involved, is to have each read his or her story aloud to the other(s) and the other(s) then ask questions. Each child is to make corrections, filling in the blanks so to speak. If only one child, he or she can have lunch or watch a half hour show and then return to read it aloud to him/herself. The final step is the audience with you. Remember the ‘mild competition’? You will judge the stories and because they differ in subject matter slightly, you can easily choose to give them each top marks.

Only if one of the children feels his story was inadequate would you be somewhat agreeable, show areas for improvement and target a better attempt next time. In that case, the other child, the ‘winner’ cannot be left to gloat. You should indicate how the inadequate story was actually better in some areas, and therefore the ‘winner’ may not be so lucky next time. If both writers are proud of their stories, again agree, but look forward to even more exciting stories next time. In either case, setting up for next time is crucial if you are going to use this technique over the long term.

If you get this to work the benefits are amazing! They are reading, maybe even researching, and writing. There’s no reason to fight. The TV can be off. They can be proud of accomplishments. They may look forward to the exercise next time. And best of all, you should be able to get back to work.

Through theory learning and hands-on practical training one is provided a general key towards development in collecting other keys, either focusing upon specialisms in becoming an expert in a particular field or a focuser to many fields in gaining perhaps a broader range of knowledge and skills while not specialising in any one field. Development is about an awareness as to how “things” work, their purpose and the principles involved to why they be as they are as a result of others constructive logical minds. To have scope, logic and understanding as to much of everything one is afforded a greater knowledge from which to select appropriate paths towards providing solutions OR advancing upon whats gone before in giving newer technology to subsequently build upon. Its all about WANTING to know how things work and the more the opportunities to learn from others or in what is SEEN naturally the more one can develop too in overcoming what others may percieve as being a major obsticle.

The University of Southern California has announced the introduction of a bachelor’s program in video game development. With the advent of sophisticated games such as MMOs and the merging of commercial interests with virtual reality, it is possible that USC did this as an academic exercise rather than a place to park its football players.

Other mainstream universities have similar programs, among them Carnegie Mellon, Georgia Tech and Southern Methodist University. The game industry has cracked the seven billion dollar mark in annual revenue. More important from an academic point of view perhaps, is the prospect of applying game theory, analysis and development skills to cultural or economic environments that are not strictly about games. Major game producer Electronic Arts has helped to underwrite the USC program simply because of its focus on non-commercial applications.

It’s a fair guess that the skills and analytical tools one might develop in a video game liberal arts degree program will be increasingly applicable in commercial online applications. The Internet has become a major commercial marketplace, one that functions more efficiently as the websites utilized for commercial exchange become more sophisticated and, to some degree, have high level graphics.

With that in mind, the nuts and bolts of a video game education still have to do with the development of a sophisticated piece of software. Critical skills include digital animation, game design and game programming.

Basic job descriptions within the business have included:

Programmer
A programmer can work on the game engine, the artificial intelligence features, the tools, hardware and network.

Designer
A designer – or artists – can be an animator, 3D artist/modeler or 2D artist/texturer.

Level Designer
Though it sounds similar and uses some of the same skills as a designer, level design is a job unto itself. Level designers need to have some art proficiency, but must also have good spatial awareness, organizational skills and lightning effects knowledge.

Writer
This is a growing position in the game community. There is more than just a manual to write; the story behind the game must be well-crafted and compelling. Every speaking character must have a script. Documentation is still an important element, though; as it is a necessary part of any software creation, and games are certainly no exception.

Behind these technical/creative roles are production managers, game modeling experts, and directors – much as with a film. Interactive design is an integral part of any video game and is also a key function of many websites. The transition of video game production methods to uses outside the game industry is well underway. The sophisticated graphics used in videogames are increasingly appearing in online commercials with high-gloss production values.

It will be the Internet and its importance as an economic engine that connects the video game major with the business world and provides job opportunities beyond the gaming industry. The trained, experienced level designer will find opportunities in high-end web site development companies that provide sophisticated sites for corporate sales and presentation purposes.

The flow of a high quality website (visit BMW USA for example) requires almost as much scripting as a game does, although much of the script appears as print instead of dialogue. And the use of artificial intelligence (AI) as a sales tool is probably not too far down the road – a method of taking a retail customer to the product that will suit them. Video games have forced the development of skill sets that are becoming meaningful to mainstream industries.

Over the past two decades, professional development of Yoga teachers has grown, in parity, with the volume of new students. Let’s look at some easy steps any Yoga instructor can take toward taking his or her knowledge and teaching skills to new heights.

Before you make a decision toward developing your skills, you may want to compile a list of areas where you feel you might want to go. Consider your performance reviews, feedback from program coordinators, students, or colleagues, and the input of your mentor, if you have one.

Ultimately, it is your decision to choose which direction of development or education to go in. If you have a wide variety of needs, you have to decide which ones are a priority – based upon a mix of rational thought and intuition.

Assess all of your options before choosing a path toward continuing education. When it comes to education, some of us are like kids in a candy store. We have difficulty making a decision about which course to take or which direction to go in.

Yet, there is a simple way to decide your direction. What are your students’ needs? After you become a certified Yoga teacher, your decisions are based upon the needs of your students. If your students are a particular age, have similar health conditions, or there is a predominant ailment among them, this may be your calling.

On the other hand, if you cannot see a particular need, there are many training methods, and many areas of Yoga, where we could use improvement. Some skills are on the fringe of teaching, such as communication, public speaking, and marketing. One teacher may feel these skills are not necessary, while another may see a value in improving areas, where he or she needs help.

Most importantly, choose an option that suits your specific situation. Finances and time should be given consideration. Do you have the means to travel, a budget for continuing education, or the time needed to attend an intensive for Yoga teachers? Are you a self-starter, who can learn from books, DVD’s, CD’s, and online sources?

This brings to light a variety of choices Yoga instructors have when taking courses to enhance their education and professional growth. While training intensives are an option, so are home study, independent study, online courses, and correspondence courses.

No matter which direction you choose, professional development will be the end result.
